Main Magnetic Field

Which way does the main magnetic field point in an MR scanner? 
The answer depends on the type of magnet and its configuration.  The vast majority of MR scanners sold today are of cylindrical (tube) design and have their main magnetic fields  directed along the bore of the scanner. All permanent and dipolar electromagnet scanners have their fields directed vertically or horizontally.
